Find the status definitions for Nebraska
The state of Nebraska makes it relatively simple to look up business information through the website of the Secretary of State. Below we'll walk through the steps for doing this, and show you some additional resources you might not know about.
There are any number of reasons you might need this information. It's absolutely critical when performing due diligence and for Know Your Client (KYC) purposes. If you're only performing these kinds of searches occasionally, Nebraska's search portal allows you to find basic information quickly and easily. If you're searching records like these in high numbers, there are some tools you'll want to know about, but we'll come back to that in just a moment.
You can find the Corporate and Business Search page linked above. The landing page looks like this:
As you can see, the search interface is rudimentary. Once you make your selection from the choices presented here, there are no further options for limiting the search. The selection opens a text box, in which you enter your search term. It also activates a captcha, which you must complete before proceeding (thankfully, most of the time it accepts a simple check in the box rather than the logic test).
When you perform the search, you'll be directed to the results page, which looks like this:
The results are presented 25 at a time, sorted by company name in alphabetical order. There are only two options offered for sorting the data differently: by 'Status' (active versus inactive), and by 'Type' (the legal structure of the business). You can, however, choose to sort by one of these and then the other.
On the results page, you'll see each company's name, its Secretary of State Account Number, the type of business, and its status.
Clicking on the 'Details' button (or anywhere else on a company's line) will bring you to the details page for that business.
At the top of the page, you'll find some additional information about the company:
In addition to the information you saw on the search results page, you'll find contact information for the business and for the Registered Agent, the date of the company's first filing, and the next filing due date.
Scrolling down further brings you to some additional information that's available for the business … sort of:
You can access the business filings and other documents, but it'll cost you. You can't even view a scan of these documents at no cost, as on most other Secretary of State sites.
Speaking of cost, you may have noticed one offer on the main landing page. Nebraska does offer 'batch' records by special request, but this also comes at a cost.
Nebraska offers only a basic amount of business information at no cost, and their search interface is rudimentary, with very few search filters. If you need to search for hundreds - or even thousands - of these records each month, this would quickly consume a lot of time (and possibly be quite costly). Furthermore, Secretary of State data is different from one state to another, so combining and integrating data from multiple states is complex.
