Find the status definitions for Wyoming
The state of Wyoming allows you to search for business information through the website of the Secretary of State. Below we'll walk through the steps for doing this, and show you some additional resources you might not know about.
There are any number of reasons you might need this information. It's absolutely critical when performing due diligence and for Know Your Client (KYC) purposes. If you're only performing these kinds of searches occasionally, Wyoming's search portal allows you to find the information you're looking for quickly and easily. If you're searching records like these in high numbers, there are some tools you'll want to know about, but we'll come back to that in just a moment.
The search page can be a bit tricky to find in all the options on the main landing page, so I'll save you some clicks; you can find the search page linked above. When you arrive, the search box looks like this:
The search interface is rudimentary. You can only choose to search for a business by name. (limiting your results to records that start with or contain your search term), or by Filing ID number.
When you perform the search, you'll be directed to the results page, which looks like this:
The results are sorted by company name in alphabetical order. Since there are no options for limiting or filtering your results, you'll see a wide variety of results right away, including businesses that are no longer active, and entries that are trademarks rather than businesses.
On the results page, for each name (and any previous names), you'll also see the current taxation standing of the business, and the standing of its Registered Agent, the current status of the business, and the initial filing date.
Clicking on any of the records will bring you to the Detail page for that business. By default, the general information is displayed at the top of the page:
Much of the information here is repeated from the results page. Additionally, the state in which the business was formed is displayed, as are the principal and mailing addresses for the business. There are helpful 'tool tips', providing definitions for terms you might find in those fields. The 'Print' icon at the top right opens a PDF download dialog box, through which you can save a printer-friendly copy of the information on this page.
Below this information are a series of tabs which you can click to expand. The first is the 'Additional Details' tab:
You'll find the contact information for the company's Registered Agent here, as well as the filing dates for the Annual Report, and the share values.
Beneath that is the 'History' tab:
You can view the list of document filings here, and clicking on the PDF icon will open a download dialog box.
Below that are the 'Public Notes' and 'Parties' tabs, where you'll find the signing authorities on record for the business:
Wyoming offers a reasonable amount of business information at no cost, and their search interface makes the process relatively smooth and simple for each individual search. If you need to search for hundreds - or even thousands - of these records each month, though, this would quickly consume a lot of time. Furthermore, Secretary of State data is different from one state to another, so combining and integrating data from multiple states is complex.
